David I. Barr ’48

David I. Barr ’48, who was a resident of Diakon Village in Robinwood, Maryland, died on September 6, 2017, in Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland. Dave was born in Boston on July 8, 1925, and graduated from Boston High School of Commerce. He was in the Marine V-12 program, served in World War II and attended Boston University and Dartmouth, where he lettered in baseball and football and was a member of Tabard/Sigma Chi, Green Key Society and Dragon. After graduating in 1948 he attended the University of Maryland and George Washington University for graduate studies. He moved into his life’s work of teaching and coaching in Hagerstown at the Frederick High School in the early 1950s and then for more than 40 years at the Saint James School, where he also served as dean of students and athletic director. He was a member of Williamsport Lions Club, Washington County parks and recreation board and Elks Club. He listed golf, travel and volunteer work as his hobbies and for years ran a summer basketball camp. He was inducted into the Saint James School Kerfoot Society for Outstanding Teaching and the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame. He kept up his interest in Dartmouth. At his 50th he wrote, “As I grow older the pride I have in Dartmouth deepens.” Dave was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. He is survived by children Marsha, Ruth and Scott and their families, including four great-grandchildren.
