Rachel Krevans ’79

Rachel Krevans ’79 died peacefully on July 19, surrounded by her family. Rachel majored in classics and was well known for embracing the outdoors, including activities such as the Dartmouth Outing Club and Cabin & Trail. She served as chair of DOC winter sports and helped lead the woodsmen’s team to victory in intercollegiate competition. “There’s a famous photo of Rachel sawing a log in the woodsmen competition,” says a classmate. “For me it’s a symbol of a ’79 paving the way for all women being true to themselves and not allowing others to set their limits.” Following Dartmouth Rachel spent several years in Alaska before earning her law degree at the University of California, Davis (1984), where she graduated first in her class and eventually went on to become an internationally renowned intellectual property attorney, world-class litigator and pioneer patent lawyer. After a clerkship in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Rachel joined Morrison Foerster LLP, where she spent more than 30 years and rose to chair the firm’s intellectual property litigation group. Among her many notable cases, Rachel represented Apple in its “smart-phone wars” with Samsung, winning a jury verdict of more than $1 billion. Rachel remained very close to her family and derived immense pleasure in her role as “super-aunt” to her nieces and nephews. “Granite and the hill winds ran through her,” says a classmate. “Her spirit will live on in the woods and on the peaks we all shared,” writes another.
