Thomas Armstrong Corcoran ’54

Thomas Armstrong Corcoran ’54 passed away on June 27 at his home in Seabrook Island, South Carolina. Tom came to Dartmouth from St. Jovite Station in Quebec, Canada. He attended an unconventional school in St. Jovite and then Phillips Exeter Academy. At Dartmouth Tom was an English major, a brother of Sigma Nu and a member of the ski and lacrosse teams. After graduating with an NROTC commission he served in the Navy for two years. He then earned his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. During that time he ski raced, winning a number of national championships in the United States, Canada, South America and Europe. Tom made the 1956 and 1960 U.S. Olympic ski teams and the 1958 world champion team. He finished fourth in the Olympic men’s giant slalom at Squaw Valley, California, in 1960. After the 1960 Olympics he worked for a year as a financial analyst in San Francisco and then for two years in L.A. with a regional securities firm. Tom then became assistant to the president of the Aspen Skiing Corp. He then returned to New Hampshire and purchased the Waterville Inn and 425 acres at the base of Mount Tecumseh. In the winter of 1966-67 he opened the Waterville Valley Resort. He owned the resort until he sold it in 2010. He worked to bring top ski competitions to Waterville Valley. His wife, Daphne, predeceased Tom by two months. He is survived by children Michael, Christine, Kathleen and Kerry and stepdaughters Daphne and Linda.
