John Henry Hoeven ’52

John Henry Hoeven ’52 passed away on August 19 at his home in Minot, North Dakota. Jack was born and raised in Aberdeen, North Dakota, and graduated from Central High School. At Dartmouth he majored in history and was a member of Phi Delta Theta. Following college Jack served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years. He spent his entire business career in the banking business, briefly in Montana, then in Bismarck and Ashley, North Dakota. In 1964 he transferred to Minot to become vice president, then president of Union National Bank. In 1970 he invested in First Western Bank and Trust in Minot, his final move. He retired as president of the bank and served as chairman until his passing. Jack was always active in community and political affairs in Minot, serving with a number of organizations. He was also active in community sports and has two fields named in his honor. In 1953 Jack and Patricia Chapman were married in Great Falls, Montana. They had three children—daughters Rebecca and Marjorie and son John III ’79, who served as governor of North Dakota and now represents North Dakota as a U.S. senator—who survive him. Pat predeceased Jack in 1979. His second wife, Raziye, passed away two days before Jack. He had two brothers, a cousin and an uncle who graduated from Dartmouth.
