Thomas A. Garrity ’52

Thomas A. Garrity ’52 of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and formerly of Somers, New York, passed away at home July 17 following a brief illness. Tom was born in Brooklyn on December 23, 1930, and raised in Lynbrook, New York. He came to Dartmouth from Lynbrook High School, majored in history and was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. Following a tour of service in the U.S. Army, he began a career in insurance brokerage that took him to live in Illinois and New York, but also with international responsibilities. He rose through the ranks to end his career as a senior executive at Aon, a multi-national insurance brokerage firm. While in Illinois Tom served several years as a trustee on the Elk Grove Village town board and while in Florida he was an officer of the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club, where he was a member for more than 25 years. He was an avid golf and bridge player and enjoyed a hot political argument and a cold gin and tonic. Tom was a loyal Dartmouth alumnus and some of his happiest times were spent at football and reunion weekends at Dartmouth with lifelong friends. Tom was predeceased in 2011 by his wife, Joanne. He is survived by children Tally, Tracy, Terry, Tina and Tom and their spouses and grandchildren Shelby, Casey, Tommy, Brenna, Hannah and Lizzie.
