C. James Schaefer III ’48

C. James Schaefer III ’48 died on July 27. Born in Orange, New Jersey, Jim was raised in Summit, New Jersey, and lived in Short Hills since 1978. Jim served a stint in the Navy in World War II in between earning his academic degrees from Dartmouth and Tuck School. He was manager of foods promotion at Beech-Nut Packaging Co. before joining the Dickie-Raymond direct marketing agency in New York City, where he was vice president during its merger with Metromedia Inc. in 1964. In 1968 he cofounded and was president of the DR Group, a prominent direct response agency with offices in New York, Boston and London. His company merged with Needham Harper Worldwide, where as executive vice president and board member he participated in another merger to form the Omnicom Group, at that time the world’s largest advertising agency. Retiring from Omnicom in 1990, he remained active with the United Way of Milburn-Short Hills as campaign chairman. He was a lifetime member of Canoe Brook Country Club and in New York of the Lotus Club, the Dartmouth Club of New York and several fishing clubs. Jim was an avid golfer and fisherman who traveled widely in the United States and abroad. He was very active throughout his life with the class of ’48, serving as vice president, president, executive committee member, reunion committee member, alumni fund leadership agent and regional club president. Jim’s wife of 65 years, “Ellie,” predeceased him; he is survived by son Charles and his wife, Elisabeth.
