Mark Philip Harty ’73

Mark Philip Harty ’73 died on February 2 in Westport Point, Massachusetts, from complications related to a two-and-a-half-year struggle with the effects of Lyme disease. A native of Amherst, New York, Mark came to Dartmouth from Amherst Central High School. At the College he majored in history, co-captained the varsity tennis team (Dartmouth tennis honor roll member), was a member of Sigma Nu and served both organizations as a student officer and later as an alumni overseer at Aquinas House. After graduating magna cum laude from Dartmouth Mark worked for two years as an officer in the admissions office before attending law school at Georgetown University. In 1978 he joined the Boston law firm of Morrison Mahoney LLP, where he became a partner specializing in employment and professional liability law and was also managing partner from 1998 to 2016. Mark served several terms as an officer of the class of 1973 (first as secretary, then as head agent and later as president), as president (1986-87) of the Dartmouth Alumni Council and as a member of the executive committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association. In 1999 he received the prestigious Dartmouth Alumni Award. Mark was a trustee on the boards of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston and the Cristo Rey Boston High School. He was a director on the boards of the Greater Boston Legal Service Corp. and the American Law Firm Association. Mark is survived by his wife, Sally, and sons Brendan and William.
