John Lloyd III ’52
John Lloyd III ’52 passed away in Camden, Maine, on March 13. John was born in New Jersey on February 27, 1929. He graduated from the Lawrenceville School in 1947. He deferred his admission to the College after being selected for the English Speaking Union one-year exchange program at the Repton School in England. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1952, an international affairs major, and entered the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service. He and his family spent the next 30 years in the diplomatic service, as an economics officer and Indonesian language-Southeast Asia specialist. John’s family was the bedrock of his life: Wife, Janet, whom he married in late 1952; sons John ’76, Christopher, David ’78, Peter and their spouses; daughters Linda and Jennifer and their spouses; 11 grandchildren and their spouses; and three great-grandchildren. They all survive him. John’s last assignment was in the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Refugee Affairs, culminating in a second career with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva, Switzerland. Following retirement John developed and taught courses in refugee affairs for the Iliad program at Dartmouth and Southern New Hampshire University. His favorite occupation was planning annual family hiking trips in the White Mountains, where he “bagged” all but three of New Hampshire’s 48 4,000-footers.
