John B. Spring ’57
John B. Spring ’57 died at home in Seaside, Oregon on January 14. He had prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Jack grew up in New Hampshire and came to Dartmouth from Nashua High School in 1953. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and belonged to Phi Sigma Kappa and the Marching Band. Following graduation he served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a commissioned officer. Upon discharge he returned to Hanover and earned a master’s in business administration from Tuck in 1961. From 1961 to 1967 Jack served as a certified public accountant for Price Waterhouse in San Francisco and traveled extensively between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. He joined Ford Motor Co. in Detroit as an internal auditor and then served as chief financial officer of National Car Rental in Minneapolis and Household International in Chicago. An avid cyclist, Jack biked the Scottish Hebrides and the California coast. With his brother, David, he cycled the perimeter of the big island of Hawaii. Jack also was an avid runner and ran the Twin Cities marathon to celebrate his 50th birthday. A Francophile, Jack made several trips to Paris to enjoy the food, wine, language and hospitality of the French, who always seemed to reach out to him. Jack retired at age 57 and moved to Gearhart, Oregon. He was very active in civic affairs, his church and Dartmouth affairs. Jack leaves his wife, Susan, four daughters and seven grandchildren.
