John H. Hatheway ’48

John H. Hatheway ’48 died on April 24 at home in Hanover, joining his wife, Pat, who died 12 years ago. He leaves behind three children and their spouses: John and Bethany, Geoff and Mary Beth, and Sara and Pete; seven grandsons; and his companion, Judy. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the DOC and French and Spanish clubs, and earned his M.B.A. at Tuck School. He also served in the U.S. Army from February 1946 to November 1947. John spent his entire business career with Young and Rubicam rising to executive vice president. John and Pat married in 1955 and after having their first son moved to Chappaqua, New York, where he became active in the Episcopal Church, serving in leadership roles at St. Mary’s the Virgin Church. John was passionately involved with Dartmouth his entire post-graduate life, continually serving as class agent, reunion chairman for his fifth, 50th and 65th (and many mini) reunions, class president from 1993 to 1999 and ongoing executive committee member. He was a board member of the Dartmouth Club of New York City for 28 years and president for four years. He was chairman of Dartmouth Third Century campaign. He received the distinguished Dartmouth Alumni Award in 1980. He served the College as Hanover Inn overseer, public affairs advisory committee chair, Dartmouth Life editorial board member, class vice president and Tuck class secretary. John was an avid skier and golfer. The family enjoyed many weekends at their farmhouse in Jamaica, Vermont, near Stratton Mountain.
