William Harry Garland ’54

William Harry Garland ’54 passed away on January 6 in Bradenton, Florida. Bill came to Dartmouth from Orange, New Jersey, where he attended Orange High School. At Dartmouth Bill was a brother of Phi Delta Theta and sang with the Glee Club. He attended Tuck School. He entered the Navy as an ensign, serving as the communication officer on the USS Beatty and later as a judge advocate in the Navy Reserves. After discharge from the Navy Bill attended Columbia University and then received his law degree from the University of Florida. He practiced elder law with the law firm of Garland and Padelford in Bradenton for many years. Bill served Manatee County for 53 years, including a term as judge for the City of Palmetto. A long-term trustee of the University of Sarasota, Florida, he was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws by the school. He was a member for 38 years of the Bradenton Kiwanis, which recognized him as a G.F. Fellow, and he was a 32nd-degree Mason. Bill is survived by his wife, Dorothy, daughter Leslie and sons Peter and Thomas.
