John Peter Daniels ’59

John Peter Daniels ’59 died on May 14, 2016. He entered Dartmouth from Beverly Hills (California) High School and majored in government. He was a member of Delta Upsilon and a varsity swimmer, captaining the swim team his senior year. Following graduation from Dartmouth, Jack earned his law degree from the University of Southern California and practiced law in the Los Angeles area for more than 40 years. In the early 1980s, in partnership with his longtime colleague Paul Fine, he founded a firm specializing in all aspects of civil litigation. The Daniels, Fine law firm consisted of about 20 lawyers at the time of Jack’s retirement several years ago. Following retirement he served as a full-time mediator and arbitrator with the firm Judicate West. He wrote a number of articles about trial practice and was an active member of several professional associations, including the American Board of Trial Advocates. His affinity for the water continued throughout his life. In addition to competing in Masters swimming events, he became a scuba diver and diving instructor. His wife of almost 30 years, Susan, who predeceased him, was a professional underwater photographer and, in addition to their mutual love of the water, they raised and trained guide dogs. Jack leaves his brother and sister-in-law, William ’63 and Claudia, and five nieces.
