Robert Lionel Conwel Maxwell ’82

Robert Lionel Conwel Maxwell ’82 died unexpectedly on July 31, 2016, of undetermined causes. Robert was born in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 1982 he graduated from Dartmouth with an A.B. in music and music composition. Through the years, Robert worked for Bank of America, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard and lived in Ottawa and Toronto. In 2007 Robert decided to pursue his love of cooking and enrolled in Liaison College in Toronto to become a chef. In 2008 he won first prize in a baking contest with his peanut butter and jelly shortbread cookie recipe (gaylea.com/recipes/shortbread/1029-retail-recipes-shortbread-peanut-butter-and-jelly-shortbread-bars). Robert worked as a chef at local restaurants and held cooking workshops. His dream was to open his own restaurant and serve a comfort food menu. Classmate Patrick Viguerie remarked, “Rob was one of a kind. He was not only an amazing bassist with an iconic stage presence, but also a gifted pianist and composer.” Classmate Chris Marriott added, “Anyone who was friends with Rob on Facebook knew he was passionate about politics and the issues of the day. And while he could disagree vehemently with someone, he never was insulting, nor did he let it get in the way of his friendships.” Robert is survived by his parents, Hester and Lionel, and his sister, Denyse ’84. The Maxwell family requests any contributions be made to the Dartmouth College Fund in Robert’s memory.
