Harold L. Smith Jr. ’51
Harold L. Smith Jr. ’51 died on February 17, 2015, in Everett, Washington, following a stroke. He is survived by his wife, Marion, three children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Hal came to Dartmouth from Deerfield Academy. He was a government major and member of Theta Delta Chi and Dragon senior society. He earned his “D” as a member of the swimming team. Following service as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, Hal and Marion moved to the Pacific Northwest. Originally planning a career in the practice of law, he made a major shift and became a chemist with General Electric, Martin Marietta and Weyerhaeuser. He acquired the necessary skills by taking science courses at the University of Washington while working the swing shift at Boeing. He retired in 1986. Hal’s great love was the outdoors, usually in the company of his beloved dogs. He was a hunter, fisherman, camper, hiker, sailor and gardener.
