Robert Clinton Barnum Jr. ’43

Robert Clinton Barnum Jr. ’43 died October 23, 2016, at home in Stamford, Connecticut. Born and raised in Stamford, Bob graduated from the Edgewood School in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was class treasurer, a member of the dramatics club and played football and baseball. At Dartmouth he majored in political science and was circulation manager for The Dartmouth and a member of the Interfraternity Council and Theta Delta Chi. Bob served for three years as a gunnery officer in the U.S Navy in the Atlantic and South Pacific. After discharge he graduated with distinction from Cornell Law School, then spent two years with different law firms until 1950, when he and colleagues formed Ivey, Barnum and O’Mara in Greenwich. By his retirement in 2009 it was the largest law firm in Greenwich. After the death of Marion, the mother of his four children whom he had married in the mid-1940s, Bob married Joan in 1972. Bob was active in town government, serving for 25 years as Greenwich representative at the annual town meeting (15 of those years as moderator), on charter revision commissions and on the Greenwich board of health. Ever loyal to Dartmouth, Bob was a class officer, Alumni Fund volunteer and regional agent and gift planning chair. His wife Joan predeceased him. He is survived by children Clint, Charles, Lynne and David and their spouses; stepsons Will and Rob and their spouses; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
