Peter Frank Geithner ’54

Peter Frank Geithner ’54 passed away on July 29 in Orleans, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth he was an international relations major and a brother of Beta Theta Pi. Peter was a member of Casque & Gauntlet, Palaeopitus, Undergraduate Council, Green Key and Vigilantes. He was a member of the varsity basketball team and was captain senior year. Peter was president of the class of 1954 during senior year. He served in the Navy from 1954 to 1957 as a naval aviator. After receiving an M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies Peter joined Columbia Carbon International as assistant to the president. In 1962 he joined the U.S. Agency for International Development, working in Rhodesia, Zambia and Washington, D.C., as a program officer, special assistant and director. In 1968 Peter joined the Ford Foundation, where he worked for almost 30 years. At the Ford Foundation Peter helped shape programs in support of education, public health, human rights and economic development. Peter served as adviser to the Asia Center of Harvard University, China Medical Board, Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, Rockefeller Brothers Fund and other organizations. Peter also served on the boards of the National Committee on U.S-China Relations, China Center for Economic Research and Center for the Advanced Study of India. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Deborah. He is survived by children Timothy ’83, Sarah ’86, Jonathan and David ’88.
