John Higley ’51
John Higley ’51—part of a three-generation Dartmouth family including his father, Clifford, class of 1924, brother Dick ’49 and son Tim ’85—died on March 16 in Charlton, Massachusetts. John grew up in Hudson Falls, New York, and, following graduation from Dartmouth and service as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, spent his entire life as an active community member in small Massachusetts towns. His former neighbors in Sutton, Massachusetts, describe him as a universally respected, generous gentleman whose word was his bond. He gave back to his community as a United Way volunteer, Rotarian and chamber of commerce member known for organizing golf outings that benefitted local charities. John was a career banker, spending 25 years as a senior vice president of Mechanics Bank in Worcester. He was for eight years an executive search consultant, specializing in searches for bank executives. He concluded his career by placing himself as executive vice president of Granite Bank in Barre, Vermont, to which he commuted each week from his home in Sutton. Golf was a lifelong passion, as was showing purebred Siberian huskies. Dog shows took John all over the country. Several of his huskies were champions in their breed. At Dartmouth John was a history major and a member of Psi Upsilon. He earned an M.B.A. at Boston University. He is survived by his wife, Jane, two children and two grandchildren.
