Charles W. Martin ’54

Charles W. Martin ’54 passed away on May 4 in Richmond, Indiana. Chuck came to Dartmouth from Omaha, Nebraska, where he attended Omaha Central High School. At Dartmouth he was a geology major and a brother of Sigma Pi Epsilon. After graduation Chuck served in the U.S. Army for two years. After discharge he attended the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his doctorate in geology in 1961. He then accepted a position as an assistant professor in the geology department at Earlham College in Richmond, retiring as a full professor after 36 years. At Earlham Chuck was a founding member of the Earlham Wilderness Program and a participant in the college’s studies in a cross-cultural education program in Japan. An Eli Lilly faculty fellowship in 1983-1984 sparked his interest in the Oregon Trail and led to his long involvement with the Oregon-California Trails Association. Active in the Richmond community, Chuck served as a member of the Society for the Preservation and Use of Resources and the Richmond parks and recreation boards. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, and children Charles, Amy ’85 and Catherine ’87.
