Ray Valentine “Bud” Schumacher Jr. ’52

Ray Valentine “Bud” Schumacher Jr. ’52 passed away on June 15. Bud was born June 3, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio. He lived in Bexley, Ohio, where he graduated from Columbus Academy in 1948. At Dartmouth Bud graduated in 1952 and was a member of Kappa Sigma. He and his wife, Suzanne “Sudie,” were married in 1954. Bud and Sudie moved to San Diego in 1960 as Bud followed a career working for the Bell Telephone companies until 1981. Then, making use of his experience as secretary treasurer of the company, he worked as an independent investment broker until 1991. In San Diego Bud pursued a lifelong love of ocean swimming. He won several national masters swimming championships in long-distance swimming and completed 47 straight La Jolla Rough Water swims, his last in 2007, with his family participating alongside. Bud was one of the founders of San Diego Swim Masters, the first and oldest local masters swim club. He is survived by Sudie; sons Steve, Dan and Rick and their spouses; grandchildren Jennifer, Devyn, Erik, Katelyn, Carly, Ryan, Dylan and Darby; and sister Susan.
