Robert Moore McIlwain ’50

Robert Moore McIlwain ’50 of Bernardsville, New Jersey, and Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on October 24, 2015, not long after he attended his 65th reunion at Dartmouth. Bob enjoyed a full life with his wife, Joan, who survives him with sons Robert Jr. ’81, John, David ’85 and Bill ’89, their wives and grandchildren Chelsea, Russell, Jenny, Wesley, Juliet, Charlie and Elizabeth. He graduated from the Haverford (Pennsylvania) School and spent a year in the Coast Guard before entering Dartmouth. He earned an A.B., followed by a master’s from Thayer School and an M.B.A. from Tuck. He was a class president as an undergraduate and never missed a class reunion in 65 years. After college, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy for three years, then worked for McKinsey & Co., Singer Corp., Warner-Lambert and Engelhard Corp. He spent the last 13 years of his career as a senior executive at Englehard, retiring from there in 1992. For 57 years he and Joan had a wonderful time raising four boys and having great fun with their friends and family. They enjoyed tennis, skiing, golf, dancing and bridge and traveled to many parts of the world. Also, they were active supporting their communities. Classmates Jack Harned ’50, Bob Kirby ’50 and Alex Hoffman ’50 and their wives attended his memorial service on November 7. “The church was full of his friends,” according to Hoffman. “You could feel the respect and affection they had for him. He loved life fully.”
