Martin L. Ullman ’48
Martin L. Ullman ’48 died peacefully on March 6. “Marty could be seen whizzing around Santa Rosa, California, in his emerald-green Jaguar convertible,” according to daughter Edy ’77. “Marty loved Dixieland jazz, Shakespeare and scotch. He was an avid reader, baseball fan and life of the party.” Marty was born in New York City in 1926 and graduated from Brookline High School in Massachusetts. Enlisting at 17, he was in the V-12 at Dartmouth, served in World War II and was a second lieutenant with the 1st Marine Division in Tianjin, China, from 1943 to 1946. He received his Dartmouth degree in 1948 and Tuck M.B.A. in 1949, when he married Alabama-born Ann “Tupie” Berman, who predeceased him in 2008. They moved to southern California, where he served as CEO of the family manufacturing business, Royal Pacific Co. Their marriage of 60 years was filled with children, friends and travel. After retirement they spent a year in Shanghai, China, training Chinese teachers to teach English, and Marty was renamed “MaDing.” He is survived by Edy and her husband, Bruce; son Douglas and his wife, Laura; grandson Max and niece Lynda. Marty was active in his regional Dartmouth club and served as vice president (1988-89), book award chair (1989-90), scholarship fund chair (1988-90) and Alumni Fund class agent (1992-2002). Edy says that MaDing will be remembered for his love of life and “his ‘fix-bayonets-and-charge’ spirit.”
