John Peter Van Hazinga ’67
John Peter Van Hazinga ’67 died October 28, 2014, while hiking in the Adirondack Mountains. “Van” came to college from the Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. He was active in the Dartmouth Outing Club, Cabin & Trail, woodsmen’s teams; graduated with honors in earth sciences; and served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam conflict. He worked as a contractor and builder in Colorado, Texas, New York, Massachusetts, California and New Hampshire. He is survived by his wife, Maureen, and children Rebecca ’95, Rachel and John. Van was an organic gardener, woodworker, poet and lover of both farming and wilderness. He was a member of the Vedanta Society of New York City. Van’s poem from the 25th reunion book explains his life as a poet and woodsman.
