Richard James Hastings ’55

Richard James Hastings ’55, M.D., died December 31, 2015, in Woodstock, Vermont, after a yearlong struggle with cancer. Dick came to Dartmouth from Groton (New York) High School. In his freshman year Dick played football and basketball and started his premed studies as a chemistry-zoology major. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Dragon Society and Green Key. After graduation Dick did a two-year tour with the Navy as a lieutenant, j.g., on the USS Pawcatuck. He returned to Dartmouth Medical School for two years and completed his M.D. at Cornell Medical School. Dick practiced orthopedics at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead, New York, for 33 years. He served as chief of surgery and became a trustee of the hospital. After retiring Dick moved to Woodstock and remained active in Dartmouth activities. He served as class president for five years and a member of the Alumni Council for three years. In 2004 he received the Class of 1955 Award. Dick is survived by his wife, Jill, daughter Cary, son Timothy and six grandchildren.
