Barry Jay Nova ’54

Barry Jay Nova ’54 passed away on March 2 in Greenwich, Connecticut. Barry came to Dartmouth from Brooklyn, New York, and was a government major and brother of Sigma Chi. After graduation he served two years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. In 1957 he started a career in advertising in New York City at Friend Reese and in 1959 moved to Madison Avenue at Lennon & Newell as merchandising associate and eventually senior vice president on such accounts as Muriel Cigars and Ballantine Beer. After Hubert Humphrey’s 1968 presidential campaign hired Lennon & Newell for the general election against Richard Nixon, Barry directed the campaign’s advertising nationwide, forming a division known as Campaign Planners. After the Humphrey campaign he went on to lead advertising for a number of other Democratic candidates, including U.S. Sens. Harrison Williams, Ralph Yarborough and John Glenn. Barry also aided Jimmy Carter with debate preparation during the 1976 general election. In 1974 he joined U.S. Tobacco as a marketing executive, serving as executive vice president and president of the company’s tobacco division. He left the company in 1984 and joined Consolidated Cigar. In 1990 he opened his own consulting business, advising a number of other companies on marketing and advertising strategy. Barry retired in 2000, serving his community of Greenwich in many capacities. He worked as full-time director of communications for the Greenwich YMCA from 2007 until his passing. Barry is survived by his wife, Susan, and children Elisa and Scott ’87.
