James B. Malley ’43

James B. Malley ’43 died June 23, 2015, in Weston, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth he majored in history and was a member of Sigma Nu. After Dartmouth Jim spent two years in the Navy, discharged as a lieutenant, attended Harvard Law School, and briefly practiced law before being called back for military service in Korea. Following his second tour of duty, Jim lived briefly in San Francisco, then joined a law firm in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he became a tax and trust specialist. In 1954, feeling “I wanted something more and different,” he said, Jim started the long road toward Jesuit priesthood. He was ordained in 1964 and a year later left for missionary work in Brazil. In 1973 Jim joined the campus ministry at Georgetown University. In 1981 he joined the ministry at Boston College Law Center, where he served as a student counselor, assistant dean and adjunct professor. From 1984 to 1988 he was also executive secretary of the Jesuit Conference in Washington. Ever loyal to Dartmouth, Jim was a member of the 1993 reunion committee, a class agent and Alumni Fund volunteer. Classmates will remember the warm, graceful way Jim conducted class memorial services at reunions. In the 50th reunion book, Jim wrote: “The root of my Christian ministry boils down to Jesus’s commandment, ‘Love one another.’ ” In retirement Jim continued his ministry in nursing homes and prisons and performed administrative jobs in the Jesuit community. In his last years Jim lived at the Jesuit Campion Residence and Renewal Center in Weston.
