Hubert A. Aronson ’51
Hubert A. Aronson ’51, M.D., a distinguished neurosurgeon as well as a teacher and researcher in his medical specialty, died on November 16, 2015, in Coral Gables, Florida. Hugh’s life in medicine took him from the Tufts University School of Medicine, from which he graduated with honors in 1955, to residencies at the Yale Medical Center and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London as a Fulbright scholar. He taught for a year at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and then began a 50-year career as an academic neurosurgeon at the University of Miami. He was also in private practice at the South Miami Hospital in Florida. Hugh described his move to Florida in 1963 as “a pivotal decision.” The University of Miami’s medical school was a fledgling institution, just beginning to establish itself. During his half century there he served as chief of neurosurgery, president of the medical staff and a member of the board of governors of South Miami Hospital. He also served as president of the Florida Neurological Society. The hospital recognized him as its Person of the Year in 2005. He was a man of many interests, including travel (to every continent) with his late wife, Leaty, history, photography and the arts. Hugh learned to play the piano in his 70s. An avid Dartmouth Outing Club member, he was an active skier and played golf and tennis for much of his life. Hugh is survived by five children, including Judith ’82, and eight grandchildren.
