David Morton Schwartz ’52

David Morton Schwartz ’52 of Chevy Chase, Maryland, passed away at home on July 24, 2015. David was born on February 6, 1930, and graduated from Scranton (Pennsylvania) High School before coming to Dartmouth. He graduated with a degree in government and was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi, the Russian Club, International Relations Club and Dartmouth Outing Club. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years, mostly in Germany, before entering Georgetown Law School, graduating in 1957. At Georgetown he made the law review. After law school David went to work for the Interstate Commerce Commission and stayed with the federal government until 1970. David was part of a core group that created the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1966 and then joined the DOT as director of policy review. In 1971 he joined the Boston law firm of Sullivan and Worcester and remained there until his retirement in 1997. His focus was the transportation industry. Outside of law, David was devoted to support of the State of Israel and he was active in several organizations, including the Jewish Institute of National Security Affairs and the Zionist Organization of America. In 1960 David and Gail Diamond (Vassar ’57) were married and she, daughters Anne, Susan and Rachel, plus their spouses and nine grandchildren, survive him.
