Allan R. Hardie ’43

Allan R. Hardie ’43 died September 23, 2015, at home in West Hartford, Connecticut. He grew up in Garden City, New York, and graduated from Choate, where he was class secretary-treasurer, on the student council and a member of the cross country and track teams. At Dartmouth Allan majored in English (graduating summa cum laude), was a Senior Fellow and member of Phi Beta Kappa, Casque & Gauntlet, Green Key (president), the Vigilantes and Psi Upsilon. He was also class secretary and a member of the class executive council and played soccer in his senior year. As an Army officer during the war, Allan served three and a half years in the Office of Strategic Services in North Africa and Europe. On his return he completed his M.B.A. at Harvard, graduating with distinction. He then joined the Aetna Life Insurance Co. in Hartford, Connecticut. He remained with Aetna throughout his working years, except for 18 months back in the service during the Korean War. His specialty was employee benefits. He retired in 1982 as an assistant vice president. Active in community affairs, Allan was a deacon of Hartford’s Asylum Hill Congregational Church, a member of a Biographical Book Club, a tutor of inner-city third-graders and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Allan was predeceased by his wife, June, whom he married in 1951, and son-in-law Tim. He is survived by daughter June, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
