Alan H. Loehr ’51

Alan H. Loehr ’51, a lifelong Floridian and a generous, enthusiastic supporter of his hometown of Fort Lauderdale, died on June 14, 2015. Alan devoted his time, talents and ideas to a wide spectrum of organizations in the Fort Lauderdale area. He took special interest in local Dartmouth affairs, serving for 10 years as president of the Dartmouth Club of the Gold Coast. He was also a leader in enrollment, job development and fundraising activities. Other community contributions included longtime service on the Fort Lauderdale parks and recreation board and the boards of the William R. Watts Foundation and Sunrise Country Club. He was an elder in his church, a Little League coach and an active member of the Lauderdale Yacht Club, where he raced Cape Cod Mercury boats. A sociology major at Dartmouth, Alan was a member of Kappa Sigma and Green Key and assistant manager of the football team. After graduation he served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. He did graduate work in mechanical engineering at the University of Miami. He spent his working career in the steel fabricating business, first as owner of Boca Steel Co. and later as a sales executive with Steel Fabricators Inc. Antique car collector, sailor, fisherman, gardener, golfer, music lover and stamp collector were a few of the many roles that made Alan a much-admired Renaissance man. He is survived by his wife, Gerry, four children, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Alan’s late father, George R. Loehr, was a 1920 Dartmouth graduate.
