Francis X. Mahoney ’47

Francis X. Mahoney ’47 of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, died on October 9, 2014. He attended Milton, Massachusetts, schools, enlisted in the Navy, qualified for the V-12 program and was assigned to Dartmouth. He served in the Navy Reserve for 30 years, retiring as a captain. He served on destroyers in Atlantic and Pacific fleets during World War II and the Korean War. He served as commanding officer of the Navy Reserve surface divisions in Hingham, Quincy and Brockton, Massachusetts. He closed his naval career as a Navy Blue and Gold Officer with the U.S. Naval Academy. He graduated from Boston University with a degree in mathematics and physics and an M.Ed. in mathematics education. He also studied constitutional law at Northeastern University. He taught mathematics and physics at Newman Preparatory School in Boston and then in Sharon, Massachusetts, high schools. He was later employed by textbook publishers Ginn & Co. in sales and as a mathematics consultant. He also served as regional sales manager for D.C. Health. He was a longtime member of the Educational Sales Association of New England. In Sharon he was active in community affairs, serving on the board of selectmen, several building committees and as cofounder of the Friends of Sharon Public Library. His lifelong interest was at sea. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and a volunteer tour guide at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He was an accomplished musician and an avid golfer. He is survived by five children.
