John William Bartemus ’43

John William Bartemus ’43 died April 16, 2015, in Brighton, Massachusetts. John was with our class at Dartmouth for only one year before joining the Air Force and serving as a navigator on a B-17 in the 385th Bomb Group. Shot down over France on his sixth mission, John bailed out and was captured. He remained a POW until the war ended. He then returned to Dartmouth, where he was active with the Barbary Coast and the Marching Band and was a member of Chi Phi. He graduated in June 1947. John married Mary Jane Tilton in 1948. His first job was with the New Hampshire Insurance Co. in Manchester. Transferred to Albany, New York, he eventually ended up in Rochester, New York. In 1961 he switched to the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Co. and six years later joined Paris, Budlong and Essex, where he remained until his retirement in 1987 as vice president and part owner. John and Mary Jane spent their winters in Bradenton, Florida, and divided their summers between Rochester and Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire. As a Barbary Coast alum he continued to play the saxophone and clarinet. Always an enthusiastic tennis player, he served on the board of the Tennis Club of Rochester. John also enjoyed poker and bridge. Ever faithful to Dartmouth, he was an Alumni Fund class agent. John is survived by Mary Jane and children Gail, Pamela, Gary, Peter, Penny and Susan and their families, including 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
