Martin C. Anderson ’57

Martin C. Anderson ’57 died in his sleep at home in Portola Valley, California, on January 3, 2015. He was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, and came to Dartmouth from Northborough (Massachusetts) High School. At Dartmouth Martin was a member of Phi Tau, the Athletic Council and the NROTC rifle team. He also served as manager of the tennis and squash teams. He earned his master’s from Tuck-Thayer in 1958 and received a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. From 1962 to 1968, Martin taught finance at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He had a long and distinguished career as a conservative economist. He was a fellow of Stanford’s conservative think tank, the Hoover Institute, and served several Republican presidents, including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. A top domestic policy advisor to Reagan, he was one of the founding members of the board of trustees of the Reagan presidential library. Martin wrote, coauthored or edited more than a dozen books, including several about Reagan. The Hoover Institute released his final book, Ronald Reagan: Decision of Greatness, in February 2015. Martin coauthored the book with his wife of 49 years, Annalise. Martin is survived by his wife and half-brother James McHugh, Tu’75.
