John Francis O’Malley ’47
John Francis O’Malley ’47 died on August 18, 2013, in Geneva, New York, where he was born and lived most of his life. He was assigned to Dartmouth in the naval V-12 program, and at the College he majored in economics and participated in intramural basketball and softball. After Navy service he attended Albany Law School, graduating in 1950 and returning to Geneva to practice law for more than 50 years. He was known as a fair and knowledgeable attorney. He served as a member of the local school board and was appointed special counsel for the city of Geneva for 11 years. In 1992 he was elected city judge, a position he held until his retirement in 1995. He was a lifetime member of and legal advisor for the Charles J. Folger Hook and Ladder Co., legal advisor for the Northside Fire Co., an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster, member of the board of directors of the local YMCA and president of the Geneva Jaycees. He also served as president of the Finger Lakes Council and worked to save the Smith Opera House. Although hampered by ill health in his later years, he continued to be deeply involved in civic affairs. He is survived by his wife and five sons.
