Philip Preston Brooks Jr. ’43
Philip Preston Brooks Jr. ’43 died March 3, 2015, in Cincinnati. Pres grew up in Framingham, Massachusetts, and graduated from Framingham High School. At Dartmouth Pres majored in economics, was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and the Interdormitory Council and active in intramural athletics. After graduating in December 1943 and attending aviation cadet training, Pres joined the “Dartmouth squadron,” the 8th Air Force, 95th Bomb Group, as a B-17 navigator. From 1943 to 1945 Pres flew 22 combat missions, including the first day air raid over Berlin and air offenses in northern and central Europe. After the war Pres returned to Dartmouth to earn an M.B.A. at Tuck School. In 1951 he married Ellen Munroe. He began his career as an investment analyst with Royal Liverpool Insurance Group in New York City. In 1958, after a few years with the Toledo (Ohio) Trust Co., Pres joined Central Trust in Cincinnati as vice president and investment officer, positions he held until he retired in 1983. Pres became a chartered investment analyst in 1965 and served as national president of the Chartered Financial Institute from 1977 to 1978 and president of the CFA Society of Cincinnati from 1963 to 1964. After retirement Pres and Ellen moved to South Dennis, Massachusetts. Always active in Dartmouth alumni affairs, Pres was an officer of several alumni clubs and president of his class. Pres is survived by his wife, C. Louise, whom he married after Ellen’s death; sons Philip III, Andrew and Nathaniel; and five grandchildren.
