Svati Narula ’13 was at Everest Base Camp when the April 25 earthquake triggered several avalanches, killing at least 19 people. Narula, who was working with filmmaker and mountaineer David Breashears on a new project when the tragedy occurred, suffered minor injuries. “Having to run for my life from a monstrous, apocalyptic-looking cloud of snow and ice is something I never expected to experience, ever,” she says. “It was like being in a Hollywood movie.” (That’s her tent at left, two days before the avalanche, with the Khumbu Icefall in the background. The tent was destroyed in the snowslide, which came from the opposite direction.) Breashears and Narula, a former DAM intern, remained at base camp for several days to conduct cleanup operations with members of the Indian Army.
