William Stetler Nichols ’52

William Stetler Nichols ’52 of Concord, Massachusetts, passed away on February 1, 2015, at Concord Health Care Center. Bill was born in Boston and raised in Winchester, Massachusetts. Bill graduated from Winchester High School in 1947 and from Kimball Union Academy in 1948. He then attended Dartmouth, graduating with a degree in English. He was a member of Chi Phi. In 1961 Bill received his master’s in education from Boston University and later attended Harvard University advanced graduate studies. In 1953 Bill enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he served as an air defense controller officer. Following the service Bill taught one year at Peekskill (New York) Military Academy before becoming a teacher at Lexington (Massachusetts) High School in 1957. At Lexington High School Bill was a highly respected English teacher for 37 years, as well as housemaster for 20 of those years. He was twice honored as an outstanding teacher. He was also a coach of several sports teams at the school and a drama instructor for several years. After retiring from Lexington in 1994, he continued to work in education as a substitute in the Lexington school district and was active in other civic organizations. Besides his wife of 53 years, Mary Jane, he is survived by son Scott and his partner, Dawn; daughter Wendy; and son Todd and his wife, Renae (Stockton) ’00; and six grandchildren.
