Ryan M. Ostebo ’60

Ryan M. Ostebo ’60 died unexpectedly on December 14, 2014, while playing hockey. He attended local public schools prior to Dartmouth where he graduated in 1960 with a major in history. After serving three years in the Marine Corps, he earned a master’s in U.S. history from the University of Minnesota. He then taught for three years at the Millbrook School before joining the faculty at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, Vermont, where he served as a houseparent, teacher and coach of hockey and soccer. In 1974 Ryan married fellow teacher Mary Hepburn, and together they raised her two daughters, Jane and Amy, and his sons, Eric and Tim. From 1975 until his retirement in 2010 Ryan worked as a financial planner for Northwestern Mutual Life. Ryan had many passions, but his interest and his consummate skill in hockey began at a young age in St. Paul, Minnesota, and continued until the day he died doing what he loved. He was a member of the Johnson (Minnesota) High School hockey team that in 1955 won the Minnesota State Championship. While at Dartmouth Ryan established himself as a premier defenseman and won many hockey honors, twice being named to the All Ivy Team and once to the All New England Team. He is survived by his wife, Jane and Amy and their husbands, grandchildren Frank, Katie, Billy and Sam; siblings Lynn, Robin and Paul; and sisters-in-law Jill, Martha and Laura. He was predeceased by his parents and two sons.
