Albert Bushnell Wende ’59

Albert Bushnell Wende ’59 died on September 21, 2014. He entered Dartmouth from Governor Dummer Academy in South Byfield, Massachusetts. An English major, he was known within his fraternity as “Words” due to his uncommonly extensive vocabulary. Following graduation from Dartmouth Tom received a law degree from Cornell and served as a legal officer in the U.S. Army. He then returned to his hometown, Buffalo, New York, and joined the Armor Box Co., rising from salesperson to become president. He retired as president in 1996 and continued as a director for several more years. Tom was extremely active in community affairs, including service with the Cradle Beach Camp, Opera Foundation of Buffalo and Saturn Club. Although he shed the moniker Words following graduation, his remarkable facility with the English language persisted—he was known for his literary work on the Welland Canal as a member of the Thursday Club and he also contributed to the publishing, by the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier, of Oakland Place: Gracious Living in Buffalo, a celebration of the history and architecture of his neighborhood. Tom was an avid golf player in the Buffalo area and around Boca Grande, Florida, where he spent winters for many years. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn.
