Michael Roger Pender ’47

Michael Roger Pender ’47, P.E., of Sarasota, Florida, died on November 23, 2014. He was born February 16, 1926, in Garden City, New York, where he grew up and went to high school. He started college in the summer of 1943 and left after two semesters to work in the defense industry and then to serve in the Army from 1943 to 1947. He returned to graduate in 1949, and from Thayer School in 1950. In college he joined the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, was active in the Interdormitory Council, played in the band and joined Zeta Psi. From 1950 to 1960 he worked for Madigan-Highland Engineers and from 1960 to 1965 worked as director of state exhibits at the New York World’s Fair. For the 20 years following he was commissioner of public works departments for several cities on Long Island and then commissioner for Nassau County, New York. He served as president of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers and as northeast regional vice president of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He became active in the American Public Works Association, serving as president from 1984 to 1985. He relocated to Sarasota in 1986, when he joined the consulting firm of Boyle Engineering until 2006. He served as president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and as president of the Rotary Club. He was named Dartmouth Club Secretary of the Year in 1977. He is survived by his wife and five children, including Richard ’79.
