Paul F. Schmitt ’57

Paul F. Schmitt ’57 died at his home in Larkspur, California, on August 5, 2014. The cause of death was pneumonia, but he had suffered from several illnesses in recent years. “Schmitty” grew up in the Minneapolis area and came to Dartmouth from the Blake School. At Dartmouth he majored in economics and was an enthusiastic member of Phi Delta Theta. Upon graduation he joined Pillsbury in a marketing position and spent the next 10 years with them. In 1967 he picked up his family and moved to the San Francisco area, where he joined Foremost-McKesson, a food and drug company. Shortly thereafter he broke from corporate life and cofounded MacFarlane Candies (his kids’ all-time favorite job). Later, he became Bay Area distributor for Kneissl Skis and a land developer. In 1975 Paul founded Schmitt & Co., a mini-storage management company. The company grew to employ more than 40 people at properties in northern California and Colorado. His leisure-time pursuits were adventurous and included piloting a small plane, scuba diving, skiing, hunting, hiking and mountain biking. He was a devoted father and leaves two sons, one daughter, four granddaughters and former wives Anne and Sylvia.
