Daniel A. Gutterman ’52

Daniel A. Gutterman ’52 passed away in New York City on September 24, 2014, of Merkel cell carcinoma. Dan was born in 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, prepared for college at Scarsdale (New York) High School and graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in English. He was a member of the Dartmouth Christian Union. He then graduated from Harvard Law School in 1955 and practiced law in New York City, first at Walter E. Heller & Co., then at Otterbourg, Steindler, Houston and Rosen and, finally, at Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam and Roberts. Since 1991 Dan’s proudest moments were in a second, related career in his highly regarded and extensive service teaching law in Russia, Hungary, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other Eastern European and Central Asian countries sponsored by Fulbright Scholar funds, U.S. Agency for International Development grants and other organizations. He was also a lecturer in business law and an advisor to government agencies in these countries. Dan was an active member of the New York Dartmouth Club, serving as president of the club (1981-83) as well as scholarship fund chair and counsel to the club. Dan’s wife, Susan, sons Alexander ’86, a filmmaker, and Steven, a journalist, and their families, including four grandchildren, survive him. Dan’s father was a member of the class of 1925 and an uncle was class of 1923. “He was a consistent voice for compassion, thought and human harmony,” says Alexander.
