James D. Binder ’52
James D. Binder ’52 passed away at Liberty Commons Skilled Care and Hospice in North Chatham, Massachusetts, on August 24, 2014. Jim graduated from high school in his hometown of Leonia, New Jersey, and graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in sociology in 1952. At Dartmouth he was active in the Dartmouth Christian Union, Dartmouth Outing Club and The Dartmouth daily newspaper. He then received a master’s in business from Columbia Graduate School of Business. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War in Washington, D.C., in wartime telecommunications. Jim married Catherine Walten of Tenafly, New Jersey, a graduate of Barnard College, in 1954. Jim’s working career was mostly at Binder Brothers, a family jewelry business in New York City, where he served as treasurer and traveled extensively for them and other firms. Jim and Catherine retired to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in 1995. He served actively in the Dartmouth Clubs of Bergen County, New Jersey (president, 1970-71), and Cape Cod. They attended the Orleans United Methodist Church, Nauset Newcomers and Friday Night Club, and were members of Orleans Yacht Club and Hyannis Yacht Club. Traveling extensively and gardening were pleasures they enjoyed. Catherine, sons Kenneth, James and Paul, their spouses and grandchildren Alex, Kevin, Andrew, Catherine, Claire and Cole survive Jim.
