Frank Lee Hannah ’64

Frank Lee Hannah ’64 of Hanover succumbed on April 3, 2013. Frank’s family was synonymous with skiing, so it was no surprise that he was on the ski teams at Littleton (New Hampshire) High School and Dartmouth, where he majored in math and was a revered member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. Frank competed in both alpine and Nordic events. After graduation Frank and Janette were married and for two years he taught math and coached the ski team at Hanover High School. He returned to earn a master’s in mathematics from Dartmouth. Phillips Academy lured him away to teach math and coach. He could not refuse, so moved with Janette to Andover, Massachusetts. During his 37 years there he taught and coached many sports, including skiing, soccer, cross-country, squash, softball and lacrosse for his students and their sons Andrew, Stewart and Gordon. While on a sabbatical in Scotland with the family he wrote a statistics text. Frank and Janette had big hearts, never better exemplified than when his sister’s four children became orphans when she was killed by a drunk driver and her husband died in a plane crash. The Hannah household expanded from three children to seven. His nieces and nephews became part of the family. In his early 60s Frank began to have memory problems. Sadly, the diagnosis was Alzheimer’s, which he accepted with aplomb. Janette visited him daily during the final stages of the disease. One of Dartmouth’s finest.
