George O. Southwick ’51
George O. Southwick ’51 died in Boca Raton, Florida on July 5, 2014. He was an acclaimed high school teacher, coach and teachers union official, mostly in Lexington, Massachusetts, for more than 30 years. Following four years of service in the U.S. Air Force and graduate studies at Boston University, George began his teaching career at Vergennes School in Vermont. Three years later he moved to Lexington High School, where he remained until his retirement. At Lexington he taught social studies, coached the baseball and hockey teams and was an interscholastic basketball official. He received the Massachusetts DeMolay’s Exemplary Teacher Award in 1986 and the University of Chicago’s Outstanding Teacher Commendation in 1985. He was twice chosen as his school’s graduation teacher. George became president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association in 1976. He was a member of the National Education Association’s bylaws and rules committee. Upon retirement George and his wife, Nancy, moved to Boca Raton from their long-time home in Bedford, Massachusetts. He remained active there as a duplicate bridge player, a member of the management committee of his condominium association, an avid reader and a follower of sports of all kinds. At Dartmouth George was a member of the freshman hockey and baseball teams and the junior varsity hockey team. He is survived by his wife, two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
