Amy Elizabeth Smith Settle ’88
Amy Elizabeth Smith Settle ’88 passed away unexpectedly on February 7, 2014, at her home in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Amy was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Pittsford Mendon High School in Pittsford, New York. While at Dartmouth she majored in Asian studies, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and studied in Beijing and Taiwan. Amy also earned a master’s in geography from the University of Hawaii. Amy was a dedicated middle school teacher and taught at various times in places around the world, including Shanghai, Tokyo, London, Manila, Budapest and Almaty. She traveled extensively—as often and to as many places as possible—and embraced the cultures and people of the many countries she visited. Her boundless enthusiasm and warm personality endeared her to friends, young and old, across the globe. To travel with Amy was certainly an unforgettable experience—she had such fun wherever she landed. She is survived by her husband, William; children Morgan and William; father and mother William and Marcia; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Melissa; nephews Grant and Cade; and niece Arden. They and her countless friends miss her daily. In testament to Amy’s love of Dartmouth and the affection of her classmates, 10 members of the class of 1988 attended Amy’s memorial service in North Carolina, journeying in near-blizzard conditions from as far as California and Hong Kong to join Amy’s family and friends in a wonderful tribute to her life.
