Peter Lawrence Erwin ’60

Peter Lawrence Erwin ’60 died February 4, 2014, after a long and debilitating illness known as progressive supranuclear palsy. Throughout his illness Pete exhibited those same qualities of character that earned him the respect and affection of his Dartmouth football teammates, who honored him with the Manners Maketh the Man Award his senior year. Pete was born in New York City on November 8, 1938, and grew up in Freeport, New York. At Dartmouth he played varsity football and lacrosse, was president of Phi Gamma Delta and the Interfraternity Council and was a member of Palaeopitus and Sphinx. Pete was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In 1960 he married Gail Avy. They had three children—Bonnie, Julie, and Geoffrey—and were at home in Rockville, Maryland, until 1974, when they moved to Hudson, Ohio. During his career Pete worked in sales for several furniture companies, was active in Christ Episcopal Church and for many years managed the Salvation Army kettle drive in Hudson. He was predeceased by parents Hugh Sr. and Julia, wife Gail, sister-in-law Karen, brother-in-law Pat and granddaughter Kelly. He is survived by his brother Hugh Jr. ’56 (and wife Elizabeth); sister Jane; sister-in-law Lynda (and husband William); daughters Julie (and husband David) and Bonnie (and husband Jon); son Geoffrey (and wife Amy); and grandchildren Justin, Colin, Nicholas, Christopher, Jessica, Julia, and William, Margaret and Elizabeth.
