Charles J. Werber ’48
Charles J. Werber ’48 died in his sleep with his wife of 61 years, Peggy, at his side on Oct 10, 2010 at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, Florida. The son of Charles Henry and Naomi Weber of Great Neck, New York, he graduated from New Hampton School in New Hampshire and entered Dartmouth before enlisting in the Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge he followed his father’s footsteps at Gimble Brothers, ultimately achieving his goal of owning his own retail store, Rumson (New Jersey) Roulette in 1964. There his friendly and charismatic manner made him a loved and respected member of the community. He was a member of the Creek Club on Long Island, Rumson Country Club, Sea Bright Beach Club in New Jersey, and Sea Oaks Beach and Tennis Club and Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach. Jerry’s passion for competition started early in life, beginning with the family’s love of dogs. Entering the AKC show at an early age, he won the children’s handling class at the Westchester Kennel Club at Madison Square Garden at ages 10 and 11. His athletic ability made him a formidable competitor in the fields of bowling, skiing, swimming and particularly golf and paddle tennis. He was known for his zest of life and devotion to his wife and family. He was also survived by children Carol, Melinda and Randall, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and sister Peggy.
