Alan Wilson Zeller ’47
Alan Wilson Zeller ’47, M.D., of New Harbor, Maine, died on May 4, 2014. He grew up in Plandome, New York, attended Choate School and entered college as a civilian in 1943. He majored in economics and government. His bachelor’s was from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He served as a lieutenant, j.g., in the Merchant Marine from 1943 to 1946 in the North Atlantic, participating in the Normandy invasion in 1944. He returned and graduated from Tuck School in 1948. After a year on Wall Street he returned to college, Columbia University for premed, McGill University for an M.D. and Dartmouth for a postgraduate residency from 1956 to 1961. He went into general practice in Damariscotta, Maine, from 1961 to 1969 before joining the Peace Corps as a surgeon/teacher in Kabul, Afghanistan, from 1969 to 1973. He joined Kaiser Aluminum in West Africa as medical director for 12,000 patients from 1974 to 1979. He returned to Maine where he was medical director at the Bath Iron Works from 1986 to 1993, prior to retirement. In retirement his hobbies included sailing. He is survived by his second wife and eight children and stepchildren. Notice of his death was provided by classmate Dr. Hardy Hendren, who had successfully operated on Dr. Zeller for malignancies in 1975 and 1996.
