George Fairlamb Tillson ’43

George Fairlamb Tillson ’43 died February 16, 2014, at the Attleboro Retirement Village, Langhorne, Pennsylvania. George was born in Philadelphia, but most of his childhood was spent in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated cum laude from Harrisburg Academy, where he was class salutatorian and a member of the baseball team and the glee club. At Dartmouth George majored in economics and was a member of Theta Chi. After graduation he enlisted in the Army, joined the infantry, was sent to the training program at the University of Illinois and ended up in the Signal Corp. While at the University of Illinois he met and married Violet (“Vi”) Neal. Discharged after 39 months of service, George went to work for the Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania, where he held a variety of jobs in staff and field operations. His work was largely in public relations and personnel. He retired in 1981. In their early years George and Vi lived in Secane, Pennsylvania. Twelve years later they moved to Yardley, Pennsylvania, and in 2003 they moved to the Attleboro Retirement Community. In retirement George was an active volunteer. For six years he was lay leader at the Yardley United Methodist Church, an active board member of the United Methodist Neighborhood Services in Philadelphia and on the board of the Methodist Home for Children, also in Philadelphia. George is survived by Vi and children Roger, Judy, Jim and Peggy and their families, including five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
