Howard Thomas Bates ’43

Howard Thomas Bates ’43 died February 20, 2014, at his home in Wickenburg, Arizona. Tom grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from Davenport High School, where he was an honor student and played golf. At Dartmouth he was a member of Kappa Sigma. Tom left college before graduation to join the Army Air Force, where he attained the rank of captain. After the war Tom worked for the Red Jacket Manufacturing Co. in Davenport. He held various positions in advertising, sales and financial administration. He left the company in 1967 to become a grain and livestock farmer in Bennett, Iowa. Tom retired from farming in 1981. Tom’s interests included the Crow Valley Golf Club, Rancho de Los Caballeros Golf Club, the Nature Conservatory, the Quad-City Symphony Orchestra and playing bridge. In 1953 Tom married Vera, who died in 2002. They had three children, twin sons Christopher and John and daughter Alison, who survive him. In 2006 Tom married Barbara, who survives him, as do four stepchildren and eight grandchildren.
